In today’s day and age, the importance of live scan fingerprinting cannot be stressed enough. Chances are, you’ve been told at least once or twice in your life to present your fingerprints to certain organizations as a background check for the purposes of employment or clearance.

It is an inevitable aspect of life in the modern-day world — and it is one that we are here to explain to you thoroughly.

What is Live Scan Fingerprinting?

What even is a live scan anyway, and what is a background check?

Before we officially delve into the world of live scan fingerprinting, it is vital first to understand the basics. Let’s explore the intricacies to understand the topic as a whole better.

To begin with, a Federal Investigation Bureau (FBI) background check is a comprehensive summary of an individual’s criminal history and records. From federal public misdemeanor to felony convictions, it sheds light on all sorts of illicit activity. The FBI conducts crucial fingerprint-based searches to determine whether or not individuals are eligible for whatever they are applying for. After thoroughly browsing the records in the national criminal history database, the bureau then proceeds to send the information to the Department of Justice (DoJ).

Moving forward, a live scan is a type of compulsory background check that plays an essential role in various life scenarios. Essentially, they are required by the federal and state governments and deemed mandatory for state-issued licenses, employment, and immigration clearances.

They are also obligatory for volunteering caregivers who work with vulnerable seniors and children in certain cases.

Now that we’ve discussed the basics and defined background checks and live scans, we can now proceed to look into live scan fingerprinting.

Defined as the process of electronically capturing fingerprints, this modern-day method paves the way for an effective finger-based background check. Simple in every sense of the word, live scan fingerprinting makes the procedure quicker and easier than ever before while prioritizing accuracy all the while.

The method has garnered immense popularity in recent times by eliminating the need for ink and cards and replacing the former with a glass card. After your fingerprints via live scan are electronically scanned, they are then transmitted to a government agency for examination. If you pass the background check, you can then say hello to the opportunities of your dreams!

What is the Purpose of Live Scan Fingerprinting?

It is the era of modernity — and it is the era of modern methods for all of life’s demands. Digital times call for digital measures — and this is precisely where live scan fingerprinting comes into play.

Thanks to revolutionary advancements in technology, there is no need for tedious, complicated procedures that pay no heed to efficiency. It’s easy. All you have to do is gently put your fingers on the machine’s glass and watch as your fingerprints via live scan are rolled and transmitted to private facilities or law enforcement agencies for inspection.

In the past, capturing fingerprints required you to stain your fingers with ink and press them against paper to create impressions. Though it seems relatively easy on the surface, this procedure came with its fair share of repercussions and quality issues and remained inefficient.

Today, the integration of digitalization in scanning fingerprints has made it easier, cleaner, and more accurate.

Perhaps you’re trying to apply for a job in sectors like government, finance, or banking. Maybe you want to take care of vulnerable citizens like seniors at nursing homes or children at daycare centers — or perhaps you’re looking to make it through immigration or security hassle-free. Regardless of your end goal, live scan fingerprinting is here to help you reach your objectives effortlessly.

Required for employment, licensing, VISA or immigration clearances, and certifications, the process is suitable for criminal history background checks conducted by the FBI.

The purpose of live scan fingerprinting is to help you quickly chase your personal or career-oriented dreams while also allowing government agencies to thoroughly check applicant backgrounds for criminal activity to ensure the safety of others. The digital process prioritizes precision, convenience, and efficacy above all.

Live Scan Fingerprinting is Essential for Notary Public Commissions

To obtain a notary public commission and serve as an oath administrator for crucial documents, it is essential to partake in the process of live scan fingerprinting.

You are asked to bring a “Request for Live Scan” PDF form, a photo ID, and a processing fee to the live scan site. After your fingerprints have been electronically scanned, the results will be forwarded to the FBI, the California DoJ, and the Secretary of State for careful scrutiny.

Once the government confirms the lack of criminal activity in your records, you will be issued a notary public commission. Information from the Secretary of State’s website is as follows:

  • “Prior to granting commissions as notaries public, applicants must complete a background check. To assist in determining the fitness of the applicants to hold the position of a notary public, applicants are legally required to be fingerprinted. (Government Code section 8201.1.) Applicants must have their fingerprints taken within one year of the exam date. If fingerprints are not taken within one year of the exam date, the applicant will be required to retest.”
  • “Applicants must submit one set of classifiable fingerprints, acceptable to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) for each notary public commission term. Fingerprints must be submitted electronically through the DOJ’s Live Scan Program, which takes and transmits fingerprints to the DOJ and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The Request for Live Scan Service (PDF) form is available online (NOTE: Internet Explorer works best on my computer; on Firefox, the form is blank; you may need to try other browsers).”
